Holiday pay calculator

Extra pay for working a holiday comes from your employer's policy, not the law, in every state but one. Type your rate, the hours you worked on the holiday and what your policy promises.

What you are owedupdates as you type
What these words mean
Time and a half (1.5x)
Your normal hourly rate plus half again. $20 an hour becomes $30.
Double time (2x)
Twice your normal rate. $20 an hour becomes $40. Only California requires it by law.
Overtime
Extra pay for extra hours. Federal law says 1.5 times your normal rate for every hour over 40 in a work week. Some states add rules for long days.
Work week
The fixed 7-day period your employer uses to count hours. It can start on any day, and overtime is counted inside it.

Questions

Does my employer have to pay me extra for working a holiday?

No federal law says so. Rhode Island is the only state that still requires time and a half for Sunday and holiday work in shops. Everywhere else it depends on your company policy or union contract.

Do holiday hours count toward overtime?

Hours you actually work on a holiday count toward the 40 in the week. A paid holiday you took off does not count, unless your policy says it does.
